A brilliant weekend of racing came to an end today as Emily Kay (Scott Contessa Epic) crossed the line with her arms aloft to win stage 03 of the weekend mini-series and take the overall crown.
After a 1km prologue time trial, won by Rebecca Heath (VC St Raphael), and a 45 minute criterium won by the junior world champion Lucy Garner, there was barely 20s covering the main bulk of the field and everything to play for in Sunday’s road stage.
40 miles of flattish lancashire countryside saw no-one able to form a decisive breakaway until 2 laps to go when Ky, working well with her teammates, attacked on the drag up to the line. Quickly gaining a gap she put her head down for the long haul. Sensing the danger, Nicola Juniper (Eagle RC) jumped from the main bunch and bridged across. Together the two girls extended their lead, despite the attentions of Heath and a VC St Raphael teammate. Unable to match her younger breakaway colleagues sprint, Juniper was forced to settle for second. However, their efforts in building their lead were rewarded by 1st and 2nd place in the series, Heath taking the final spot.
